Great For Baby Bums! – Real Simple, Real Diapers for Babies

It’s Real Diaper Week! All this week I will be trying to keep up with the Real Diaper Week 2012 Blog Hop hosted by Calley over at The Eco Chic. Today’s topic is Real Simple Real Diapers for Babies (health benefits, cloth diapers in hospitals, or cloth diapers in day cares). 

I picked the odd topic to talk about today – cloth diapers in day cares. It’s odd for me to talk about because my baby has never been to day care. In fact, he’s never been left with anyone but my husband or I (except that one time when we saw a 90 minute show in Vegas). I keep saying we’ll get around to doing it but we just haven’t.

Although I’ve never had to leave The Gnome, I have talked to several moms who do work full or part-time and they leave their babies with other caregivers. I have found that the same two roadblocks to using cloth pop up over and over again. I want to talk about overcoming them.

The caregivers don’t know how to, or aren’t willing to learn how to use cloth diapers. 

You’re required to bring a diaper rash cream that the caregivers slather on at every change.

If your caregivers aren’t willing to or don’t know how to use cloth diapers, ask if you can do a demo for them. I strongly suggest a velcro all in one like the ones&twos or Tots Bots Easy Fit. These diapers are no different than a disposable, they just need to put it in a wet bag when they’re done instead of throwing it away. You can also pre-load the diapers with flushable liners to make clean up super easy!

I’ve had a few cloth diapering mamas tell me that they send disposables to day care. When I asked why, they told me that it is mandatory that they provide diaper rash cream for the caregivers to slather on their babies at every change. They said that not only does it cause repelling with their diapers, but it also gets expensive since they go through so much cream. To prevent overuse, I recommend a stick form.
